ART AND LITERACY

KS1

Bear Hunt Trail

Led by our tutor, the group follows the bear hunt trail through different habitats on the estate.  (A lot of imagination is used for this activity)  We go through long grass, "snow" a "river" etc until we come to a "bear" in the woods.  On the way, in smaller groups with an adult we choose the correct word at each point and fill it in on the worksheet.

Mud Painting

Using a variety of soils, the children pain an outlined picture of a bear.

Poetry Trail

In small groups with an adult, the children collect lines of a poem from bags around the field.  When they have them all they place them in the correct order on a board.  The poem is read out loud.  (they should all be the same!)

Senses

The children use their sense of touch to describe objects in bags.

KS2  (It may not be possible to do all activities in a day. Please number in order of preference on the booking form)

  1. Ten Terrific Trees - led by one of our tutors the trail takes the group to ten different trees.  The children are told three facts about each tree.  They have to think of key words to write down about each tree.  They have to think of key words to write down about each tree. also what it looks, feels and smells like.
  2. Literacy trail - following numbers on a trail, stopping at each number, reading the questions and writing down the answer (descriptions and rhyming words)
  3. Poetry point to point - in pairs the children use a map to go to the numbers and collect a line from a poem.  When they have all lines they arrange the lines into the correct order.  Who will be the first team to complete their poem correctly?
  4. Adjective trail - this trail is used in the Walled Garden.  The children look for the numbers on ten objects around the garden.  They write down as many words as they can think of to describe the object, without using its name.
  5. Slide Show - using small frames from a slide projector.  Open them up to places leaves are put inside.  Hold them up to the light.  Stand in a circle and pass them round.  See photo link below.
