Outdoor Living Skills
Moving silently through the woods, soap making, shelter building (see below) fire making etc.
Blindfold Trail
To get the children to use their senses of touch and hearing. This activity builds confidence. Each child is blindfolded, in a line they hold on to the next person's shoulders and walk a short distance. They sit down and in turn are led to a rope which they follow through the woods. There is a sense of achievement at the end. We follow the rope back to see were the trail led and look at any problems we overcame on the way.
Conservation
This activity is generally done with the Thornham Ranger. We find out about the Ranger's job and why it is necessary. The work done depends on the time of year.
Shelter Building
In teams the children find materials to make a den. This involves working together to achieve the best result. When completed they "furnish" the den and make a garden.
Point to Point
In pairs the children go to 10 places on a map and write down information found. A number takes them to the next point and they find letters which are an anagram to be solved. This is done as quickly as possible.
Trails
A selection of trails are available depending on the time of year. Some use compasses, others maps and instructions:
Trekking trail - follows instructions, not too complicated, takes about an hour, off surfaced path.
Thornham Adventure Trail - follows instructions on a map, mainly on surfaced path, the shortest of our trails, lasts about an hour.
The Long Adventure Trail - follows instructions on a map. Takes the group further afield on dirt tracks, takes about 90 minutes
Compass Trail - uses compasses, instructions need to be read carefully, partly on surfaced path, takes about an hour
Orienteering Trail - slightly longer than the compass trail, but similar. Off main track, takes just over an hour.
