WHAT
IS A LOW IMPACT PACKED LUNCH? TIPS FOR PARENTS
We all produce far too
much rubbish. It is vital that the amount of rubbish is reduced
and at Thornham Field Centre we try to ensure that every visitor
is made aware of the need to reduce their rubbish. Therefore
we ask all school children who come either as day or residential
visitors to bring a low impact packed lunch. We hope these
tips will help you to prepare a suitable lunch for your child.
- Please put lunches in a container which can be used again or
go into the compost bin.
- Please wrap sandwiches etc. in greaseproof paper which can be
composted.
- Drinks should be brought in a reusable container, though cans
can go into our can bank.
- Try to cut down on packaging - individual snacks generally have
a huge amount of packaging and should be avoided.
- Encourage children to bring fruit - apple cores, banana skins
etc. can go in our compost bin.
- Please don't buy ready made supermarket sandwiches or rolls,
heavy on the packaging again.
- Golden rule....aim to leave as little rubbish behind as possible
- it is possible to leave no rubbish at all!
- The rubbish from your children's packed lunches will be sorted,
the rubbish which will end up in a landfill site will be weighed
and a bar chart produced showing how much rubbish per person was
left in comparison to the last 10 schools to visit Thornham.
Thank you so much for your help
