After
your trip to Thornham, even if you didn't come to do our Waste Not
Want Not course in waste minimisation, we hope that by bringing
a low impact packed lunch your class will have begun to think about
the need to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
There are lots of opportunities
to carry on this work whilst fulfilling National Curriculum requirements,
for example:
What do we throw
away? a classroom project:
Collect the rubbish from
your class for a week, this can be sorted by the children (use gloves)
Maths and IT
- rubbish can be estimated, weighed, graphs drawn, findings presented
in IT, information can be entered on a database, pie charts created
of different types of waste materials.
Geography -
collect and record evidence, answer questions, how do people affect
the environment, how and why do people seek to manage to sustain
their environment? Look at food miles. Where does our
food come from?
The opportunities are endless!
You could write "rubbish" poems for literacy, check out
the minibeasts who live in a compost bin for science and even become
an Eco School www.eco-schools.org.uk
